How to convert HEIC files to JPEG/JPG

Learn about the Apple HEIC file format and how to convert your HEIC photos for use in the MILK Design Studio.

Those with an Apple device have possibly come across the HEIC file format, as it is usually set as the default image format on Apple devices.

The HEIC file format stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It was developed in 2017 by Apple for iOS 11 and MacOS High Sierra. The new file format is preferable when used on Apple devices due to its smaller image size when compared to JPG or PNG.

The issue with this file type is that alternative software and common web browsers are yet to support the HEIC file format, so to use your HEIC image files on the MILK Books website you’ll need to firstly convert them to the JPEG/JPG file format.

There are three ways to combat this issue on your Apple device:

1. When importing from an Apple device onto a Mac computer, export as JPEG:

  1. Go to Library, Photos.
  2. Select the Photos you’d like to import.
  3. Go to File, Export.
  4. In the pop-up select JPEG and export to a destination of your choice.

2. Bulk convert to JPEG/JPG using a quick action:

Set up a 'Quick Action' on your Mac to easily and quickly convert HEIC files into JPEG/JPG. Below is a link to a helpful webpage that guides you through the process.

3. If you’re lucky enough to read this before you’ve started shooting, you can change your Apple device settings by following the below steps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats.
  4. Tap Most Compatible.

This will set your Apple device to save photos in the JPEG/JPG file format instead of HEIC.

Alternatively, if you’re a PC user with HEIC image files, don’t panic, there are plenty of resources online that help you to convert your HEIC files on a Windows operating system. Simply Google “how to convert HEIC to JPEG/JPG on Windows” to view an array of file conversion techniques.
